daring
With the desire to broaden my horizons, experience new things, and dedicate myself to God and humanity, I packed all my belongings into boxes in the summer of 2024, said a heavy-hearted goodbye to friends and family, and took the plunge into the unknown. After a few weeks of traveling, I was able to volunteer at Estación Esperanza for eight months.

appreciated
The team gave me a wonderfully warm welcome, immediately integrated me into their daily routine, and consistently showed me appreciation as a volunteer. My main tasks included tutoring, the “Arca de Noe” program, and working in the kindergarten. Since I initially spoke very little Spanish, I was mostly an observer at first, but gradually I was able to take on more and more responsibility – because at Estación, they really trust you!
In the end, I was even allowed to participate in the organization of the new kindergarten. Being part of this process and seeing the children playing in the new park with shining eyes was truly wonderful.
I also greatly enjoyed the relationships I developed with the children, teens, and adults in the “barrio” (neighborhood). It was thanks to them that the initially quite unfamiliar and strange area quickly became a new home.
I was touched to witness the difference that Estación Esperanza’s programs, the team’s presence, and faith in God make in the lives of the people in Ventanilla.
challenged
During my time in Peru, I also took on tasks that weren’t really my forte and that challenged me. I cooked for large groups of people and navigated the chaotic Peruvian traffic. Life in the “barrio” and the project house also constantly demanded creative problem-solving strategies, a certain tolerance for frustration, and a good deal of social energy. But it was precisely this that placed me right in the heart of everyday Peruvian life.
Looking back, it was primarily the challenging circumstances that made me reflect on my inner attitude and allowed me to grow personally.
enriched
My time in Ventanilla has enriched me above all else!
I had the opportunity to actively support the local community, gaining valuable experience, enjoying some unforgettable adventures, and learning Spanish. During my time at Estación Esperanza, I met wonderful and strong people who welcomed me into their lives and profoundly influenced me.
These eight intense months in Peru broadened my horizons, strengthened my relationship with God, and gave me the courage to work for positive change!
