Family care and support

A majority of the families in the slums are dysfunctional families. Alcoholism, family violence (against women and children) and sexual harassment belong to daily life in the slum. Many children are thus exposed to difficult circumstances at an early age.

Our goal

The aim of our family work is to motivate and support people to shape their lives in a constructive way in order to develop self-responsibility. We accompany and advise them in any kind of situation, but also coach them on how to improve their living conditions. Estación Esperanza gives the family member orientation and strength so that they are able to support the children in their development and can offer them a safe family environment. Approaches are shown to them on how to educate the children and positively influence their lifestyle. They should set achievable goals with the children and equip them with the necessary tools in order to achieve these goals.

What do we do

  • Family planning (consultancy for women and company to the hospital to learn about the use of contraceptive methods, including sterilization if necessary or desired)
  • Home visits
  • Family conversations
  • Help in emergency situations (e.g. accompany women to the police to file charges against the husband – often for domestic violence)
  • Couples counselling (marriage preparation, marriage conflicts) and marriage courses
  • Parents’ evenings with speakers (e.g. psychologist) in the Mahanaim school and in Estación Esperanza
  • Mediation

Sponsorship

Our sponsorship concept enables us to subsidize part of the school fees for children. The parents undertake to actively participate in our parents’ evenings and in parenting coaching.
