Information kindergarten and school building project

We are pleased about the positive developments of our kindergarten and school construction project, in favor of the children and young people in the slums north of Lima. The construction of the building on the 2’007 m2 large plot of land, which we were allowed to purchase in 2019, could progress so far that we could complete the first construction phase at the beginning of 2022.

The construction of the building on the 2,007 m2 plot, which we were allowed to purchase in 2019, could progress so far that we could complete the first construction phase at the beginning of 2022.

An earthquake-proof foundation could be built, which was a challenging and lengthy matter under the difficult soil conditions. We are therefore grateful and happy about the important milestone that has been reached.

Education

Education is the key to success and the only legal way to break out of the poverty spiral. The quality of state schools is very poor and there are often too few free places. Private schools are better, but incredibly expensive. So families from the slums can hardly afford the private schools and their children receive only a poor education or none at all. In addition, children with behavioral problems or learning disabilities are often neglected in state schools or even excluded from them. The aim of the construction project is the creation of a private school and kindergarten, in which good education for the children from financially weaker families as well as children with learning difficulties can be ensured.

In order to be able to continue the construction project now, we are dependent on further financial resources. Nevertheless, we are already using the property. Almost a year ago, 30 members of our youth groups cleaned the site and cleared away stones, pieces of wood and garbage. Together we prepared the “construction site” so that the children’s program could start. These and similar activities help the young people to take responsibility for others as well as for themselves. In this way, they experience self-efficacy and take steps towards self-responsibility in their own lives.

The first children’s afternoon was held at the construction site in mid-April 2022. The children’s afternoons in 2022 were very well attended. In addition to play afternoons, singing and handicrafts, we ran a program to promote the joy of reading: Lectura en tu barrio (=Reading in your neighborhood).

In this reading program, we can already implement important tasks of the future school. Many children who were able to read before the pandemic had forgotten to do so again. The main victims are those who attend state schools. In contrast to the private schools, these hardly conducted any online lessons during the two years of school closure.

We have the impression that the government places little value on education. The gap between rich and poor is thus widening. This is where our kindergarten/school project can come in and contribute to minimizing the gaps in education.

We plan to continue construction or complete the kindergarten in the next few months. The need for affordable and good schools at the location of our property is very high.
