News current February 2022

Latest Estacion-Esperanzas News post. It’s about the children’s week, the team, the kindergarten and the oil spill.

children week

For our time, various COVID-19-related restrictions are being taken rather loosely. Therefore, a children’s week has now become possible again, which started on Monday, February 7th. The program is run twice: in the morning in project house 1 (Kouri Hanna), in the afternoon in project house 2 (Pachacutec). For this occasion we receive the support of a church youth group from Huancayo in the Andes.

Team

The cooperation and team leadership with the extended workforce is constantly being redefined. We are now employing one of our long-standing employees (Anakarina) in Project House 2 as manager. We hope that we will achieve more consistency in the structural area.

The first construction phase was successfully completed (stable, earthquake-proof foundation, pillars, ceiling). When will we be able to continue building? If everything goes well, we can probably start kindergarten in March 2023. – Please note the two photos!

oil spill

The beaches just minutes from us are full of oil. Terrible! Repsol (an oil refinery in the neighborhood) had infiltrated various safety regulations and the terrible accident happened, which was also reported in Switzerland. Now the company is trying to avoid full responsibility. The day after the accident, they wanted to clear things up with eight people (…!?). They wanted to give food packages as compensation to the fishermen whose livelihoods had been destroyed. But some did not accept this. Repsol’s strategy now is to hire people from Ventanilla to do the cleaning work and pay good wages. So there are fewer riots as many people benefit from Repsol. Our neighbors have also temporarily received well-paid jobs in this way.
